• 8 January - The Koöperatiewe Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika (KWV), Co-operative Winemakers' Society of South Africa, is founded in Paarl, Western Cape
• 2 April - Victoria College becomes the Stellenbosch University
• 4 June - RMS Kenilworth Castle, one of the Union-Castle Line's steamers collided with her escort destroyer HMS Rival while trying to avoid her other escort, the cruiser HMS Kent.
• 5 June - The Afrikaner Broederbond, a confidential cultural organisation, is founded in Johannesburg
• The University of Pretoria Faculty of Law is formally establsihed

• Bernard Gcwensa, artist, is born in Pomeroy, KwaZulu-Natal
• 16 July - John Everitt Frost, World War II fighter pilot is born in Queenstown, Eastern Cape
• 18 July - Nelson Mandela, activist and president, is born in Mvezo, Eastern Cape

Deaths

• An estimated that almost 500,000 people died from the Spanish flu epidemic in South African, the fifth hardest hit country in the world ^[1]
